Apple Hand Pies

Desserts

Some desserts just feel like a celebration—and these caramel apple hand pies are one of them.

Servings: 12

Time: 1 hour 15 mins

Ingredients

  • 2 Food Club premade pie crusts
  • 3 medium apples, peeled and diced into bite sized pieces
  • 1/3 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp ground allspice
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp milk
  • caramel drizzle (optional - we used Ghirardelli)

Process

  1. Combine the diced apples, sugar, butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice in a medium saucepan over low-medium heat. While stirring occasionally, bring to a simmer.

  2. Allow the mixture to simmer for 2 minutes, then remove from the heat and cool at room temperature for 30 minutes.

  3. While the apple mixture is cooling, roll out your pie dough and using a cookie cutter, cut the dough into circles. Note: you want the cut dough to be at least 3 inches in diameter. Chill in the refrigerator for 15 minutes, or until ready to assemble.

  4. Preheat the oven to 375°, and line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.

  5. Arrange half the circles of dough about 3 inches apart on the lined baking sheets. Use a sharp knife to cut slits into the remaining circles which will be the top crusts, or follow our lead and cut a fun shape instead!

  6. Add about 2 tablespoons of filling in the center of each bottom crust, leaving the edges bare. Place a vented top crust on top, using your fingers or a fork to crimp the edges together.

  7. Prepare an egg wash by mixing 1 large egg with 1 tablespoon of milk. Lightly brush this mixture on top of each prepared pie, and sprinkle with coarse sugar (optional).

  8. Bake for 28-32 minutes, or until the pies are golden brown on top. Tip: The pies will hold their shape best if they are placed in the oven while cool. If they are warm from handling, freeze for 10 minutes before baking.

  9. Transfer to a wire rack to cool until ready to serve. If desired, drizzle the finished pies with caramel. Enjoy!
